Trying-Out for a Select Team
No question about it, players that are selected by invitation only must exhibit exceptional athletic skill; but their overall attitude and character must be given strong consideration as well. Each player selected must understand the importance and exemplify character traits consistent with a "Responsibility to TEAM" attitude.
Players chosen for select teams are usually recruited to play specific positions on the team. During their participation in the ESN Try-Outs, coaches will evaluate their skills based on the position they are trying-out for. The Try-Out Registration form allows players the opportunity to choose second and third choices of what positions they would like to be considered for. Player will be notified from the coaches as to what their intentions might be for the player's role on the team. This is of course subject to change at the discretion of the coach.

The ESN Certified Athletic Test (CAT)
The CAT will insure the accuracy of a Peer Group Analysis and prove to be a valuable tool for recruiting select players, establishing proper training regiments and assisting coaches with the proper placement of each player based on their skill. The CAT will provided quantifiable data and results relating to how an athlete's abilities "measure-up" against that of his/her peer group. (This program is currently under construction and unavailable at this time).

What to Expect at an ESN Try-Out
ESN Try-Outs will evaluate players on both athletic ability and skill. Due to the nature of select team recruiting, skill evaluations will be determined by the respective positions the player is trying-out for.
IMPORTANT: Players must be equipped with appropriate gear and footwear (cleats / turf shoes). Football players need to bring their own football helmet in order to complete all drills for the evaluation. Baseball players need to bring their own bats, gloves and other forms of necessary protective gear that may not be provided by ESN. ALL PLAYERS MUST BRING AN ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTFICIATE AND THE MOST RECENT REPORT CARD OR SCHOOL I.D.
Player Evaluations:
Athletic:
- 40 yd. dash
- 10 yd. dash
- 5-10-5 Shuttle
- Vertical Jump
- Endurance Run
- Agility Cone Patterns
- Push-ups (Max.)
- Sit-ups (Max)
Skill Items:
- Perform footwork drills relative to position
- Skill positions to perform various movements; such as passing, catching, hand-offs
- Review of various defensive maneuvers; such as pursuit angles, open-field tag (instead of tackle)
- Fit blocking drills (some light dummy work)
- Stance & Starts
- For baseball – hitting, throwing, fielding, pitching & catching

What Team? How Are They Formed?
Typically, teams are formed relative to a specific region within your city. Our website is equipped to assign teams relative to their respective independent school district. During the early stages of developing teams under the ESN platform, we may not have a team in your school district. However, you my still attend try-outs of other area teams for your young athlete's appropriate division. For football, if there are no particular restrictions by the team's school district regarding field rentals, then a team may have players from other regions (or school districts).
Teams are formed after ESN approves a head coach after receiving a coach application, conducting a background check and interviewing the applicant. ESN prefers coaches with at least college level experience, but it is not a requirement. Our qualification is fairly simple-Be committed to the positive coaching philosophies consistent with ESN guidelines and the Positive Coaching Alliance's "Double-Goal" Coach Approach. People who qualify are then assigned a team and the recruiting process begins. Of course, try-outs are announced after a team has been formed.

If you have received an invitation to play on an ESN select team, Congratulations! Welcome to the team! Your decision to be part of an ESN select team is certain to be a rewarding experience indeed.
We realize the impact that coaches can have on players. Each of our coaches have the desire to create a positive and uplifting environment that teaches your child life lessons as it relates to their sports team activities. We recognize the highly competitive environment of sports; which ultimately shifting their focus to a “winning at-all-cost” attitude as opposed to teaching players how to “win in life”. We will provide our coaches with a clear vision and overriding mission that will carry them throughout the entire season. The ESN Team Management Program will help them deliver a sports program that is sure to make a positive impact on your child and everyone else involved. It will be clear to all who observe your ESN team… that “CHARACTER COUNTS”.
It takes a lot of work to coach a team. I encourage and challenge you to hold yourself accountable to only the highest of standards in the way you conduct yourself.
